Windows 2000 Install
1. Back up any data you have on the hard drive.
The install will completely wipe clean the hard drive
2. You may need the software for the Network card (network card driver), and possibly other devices, such as, modem, graphics card, etc.
If you can not copy them from your present system, you may be able to get the drivers from the manufactures site but the install can be done without them.
You will need to install drivers for devices not in Windows 2000 CD.
3. You will need to have the Windows 2000 CD, its key code, and the four install floppies
If you don't have the install floppies, you can make them with the instructions from the Microsoft Windows web page, Windows 2000 section.
4. Boot to Disk #1 of 4 Windows 2000 install floppies. (See Note below)
5. Follow instructions for complete install, reformatting the hard drive
6. Remove the floppy and CD
7. Reboot
8. Install SP4 upgrade and drivers as needed. You will need to be able to get to the internet to install this Windows upgrade if you don't already have a copy.
Which probably requires the modem or NIC card drivers depending how you connect to the internet.
9. Install at least Internet Explorer version 6 (IE6)
10. Install Virus Protection (McAfee or Norton Utilities are the best) and run it against your new system
11. Back up your system after installing all your software so you have a clean
backup in case something "bad" happens to your set up in the future.
Note: If the computer fails to boot after you see it turning on and doing the memory test, you will need to change the boot up sequence so that the computer boots to the floppy.
When the computer turns on, you should see a message, briefly displaying what key to hit to get to the Setup Screen. It may be the "delete" key or F2 for example.
You will need to press that key soon after the computer turns on to get to the setup screen.
Then go to the Bootup section and make sure the boot up sequence has the floppy listed before the hard drive.
